(BSS)- Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Md Shafiqur Rahman today said the previous Awami fascist government buried the democracy.
“People were deprived of their voting rights, justice, social security and fundamental rights. However, the July mass uprising of 2024 has brought a historic opportunity to establish democracy in the country,” he said.
He said this in a statement issued on the occasion of ‘International Day of Democracy’, scheduled to be observed tomorrow.
“There is no alternative to democracy in building a just society. If democracy remains protected, a society can move forward towards progress which will be free from autocracy, exploitation and discrimination,” he said.
He described democracy as the principal foundation for establishing fundamental rights of the people, social justice, freedom of expression and the rule of law.
“Our beloved motherland Bangladesh carries a history of long sacrifice and struggle. The people of this country have repeatedly shed blood to restore democracy and human rights,” he said.
Noting the past struggles and movements to restore democracy and people’s rights in the country, he said, “This revolution must not be allowed to fail. The aspirations of the nation to build a discrimination-free and humane Bangladesh must be fulfilled.”
“On this special day of International Day of Democracy, Jamaat-e-Islami expresses its commitment to the people of the country to consolidate and institutionalize democracy,” he said.
He added that Jamaat-e-Islami has been working tirelessly to establish equality, the rule of law, citizens’ rights and freedom of expression in the country.
“The nation must not be pushed towards the curse of enforced disappearances, killings and crossfire under any circumstances,” he said.
Pledging to build a transparent and people-oriented system, he further reiterated that the nation must be freed from bribery and corruption, extortion and land grabbing by establishing the democracy and fighting against injustice and corruption.
