Danish Ambassador Christian Brix Møller recently inaugurated a newly constructed piped water system
by Hygiene Sanitation and Water Supply (HYSAWA), intended to serve 50 families in Chakmarkel Union,
Ramu Upazila, Cox's Bazar.
Denmark has supported HYSAWA since 2008, with a contribution of 50 million DKK (approx. 7.5 million
USD). The water tower has a 300-meter deep borehole with substantial production capacity, capable of
supplying water to around 100 individuals daily. The project promotes environmentally friendly
solutions with solar power, thereby reducing water production costs.
Previously, existing water points were abundant or non-drinkable due to groundwater depletion, salinity
intrusion due to climate change, and high iron concentration. Now, the new deep tube wells provide a
sustainable solution, ensuring safe water collection, for local communities. With Danish support,
HYSAWA also installed household latrines, contributing to environmental and personal hygiene,
especially for women and adolescent girls.
