Indian High Commission celebrated Maitri Diwas on 06 December 2023 at the Indian Cultural Centre in
Gulshan. It is on this day in 1971 that India officially recognised Bangladesh as an independent,
sovereign nation.
High Commissioner Pranay Verma in his welcome address highlighted the deep and historic ties
between India and Bangladesh. He noted that Maitri Diwas symbolized India’s steadfast support for
Bangladesh’s struggle for freedom and marked the genesis of a partnership rooted in empathy, equality,
mutual respect and solidarity. He underscored that India had stood for the people of Bangladesh in 1971
and will continue to do so in future as well, supporting their vision for a stable, prosperous and
progressive Bangladesh.
The Maitri Diwas celebrations showcased the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India and Bangladesh,
with a number of eminent artists from Bangladesh presenting classical and folk songs, and musical and
dance performances.
