Bangladesh needs energy security and energy sovereignty to secure its economic development.
Bangladesh has a potential of 66,802 MW (Near Shore- 41,468 MW, Offshore- 25,334 MW) wind
power and 30,000 MW on-shore according to studies. This means, the Wind power potential of BGD
is about four times the current power consumption of the country. However, this potential is
currently only marginally exploited. In the next years Team Europe and Bangladesh will focus to tap at
least this on-shore potential as well as the potential of solar power as part of a joint 400 million Euro
effort called the “Bangladesh Renewable Energy Facility” launched by PM Hasina and the President of
the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen at the Global Gateway Forum in October 2023 in
Brussels. . The initiative will be the lighthouse project of the Team Europe Initiative Green Energy
Transition in Bangladesh, which is co-led by Germany and the EU-Delegation, and includes member
states and like-minded partners. In this context, the EU will also be cofunding a German Development
Cooperation project for policy advisory. “2024 needs to be the year, to turn Renewable Energy
commitments and potentials into concrete action for Green Energy Transition in Bangladesh”, Mr.
Florian Höllen, Head of German Development Cooperation and Counsellor at the German Embassy
concludes.
