Australian High Commissioner Jeremy Bruer recently paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina. The High Commissioner reflected fondly on his time in Bangladesh since he started his
posting in 2020 and welcomed the deepening of the warm and friendly relationship between
Australia and Bangladesh.
The High Commissioner discussed highlights of his time in Bangladesh including the better
understanding of contemporary Bangladesh now held by Australians, the increase in trade to AUD 4
billion between Australia and Bangladesh for calendar year 2022, and the appointment of a resident
Defence Adviser in the Australian High Commission.
The High Commissioner raised Australians’ growing interest in Bangladesh, including in the
forthcoming election. He said he saw opportunities for trade between the two countries to increase
further and assured Prime Minister Hasina of Australia’s support for Rohingya and host communities
in Bangladesh. The High Commissioner said Australia would, through its development cooperation
program, assist Bangladesh’s economic development and that Australia would welcome further
cooperation with Bangladesh to promote a secure, prosperous and inclusive region.
