Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has approved a grant of Tk 3 crore for the celebration of Christmas this year, Tk 1 crore more than the amount sought by the Christian Religious Welfare Trust.
He approved the allocation on Monday following a proposal from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, which had sought Tk 2 crore for the festival, the biggest religious occasion for the Christian community, said Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
The grant will be allocated from the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund through the Ministry of Religious Affairs ahead of Christmas, which will be celebrated on December 25.
According to a summary sent to the Prime Minister by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Christian Religious Welfare Trust has undertaken initiatives to organise various religious and social welfare activities across the country marking Christmas.
The ministry proposed allocation of Tk 2 crore from the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund in favour of the trust for the celebration of Christmas 2026.
However, the Prime Minister approved Tk 3 crore instead of the proposed Tk 2 crore.
