The closing ceremony for an exhibition of Japanese dolls titled “NINGYO: the art and beauty of Japanese
dolls” was held recently at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. This traveling exhibition was organized by
the Japan Foundation, which is being co-hosted by Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh and Bangladesh
Shilpakala Academy. Japanese Ambassador IWAMA Kiminori and Mr. Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director General
of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy spoke on this occasion.
66 dolls have been dispatched by The Japan Foundation for this exhibition, which were set into 4
themes: “Ningyō to pray for children’s growth,” “Ningyō as fine art,” “Ningyō as folk art,” and “Spread of
Ningyō culture. The Japanese word “NINGYO” means dolls.
The exhibition reflected the spiritual culture of the Japanese people and distinct customs including
regional diversity, festivities, techniques, and style, all of which have charmed the Bangladeshi visitors.
