BNP has received a strong response in its nomination process for the reserved seats for women in the Jatiya Sangsad, with around 1,300 nomination forms sold in three days, party sources said.
Of these, nearly 900 forms have already been submitted, BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan told BSS.
An enthusiastic atmosphere was observed at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan, where women leaders from different levels of the party, along with professionals including teachers, lawyers and artists, collected nomination papers.
Aspiring candidates said they expected due recognition for those active in political movements over the past one and a half decades despite arrests, harassment and repression.
They pledged to work for women’s rights, democracy and public welfare if elected.
The nomination fee is Tk 2,000, while a non-refundable deposit of Tk 50,000 is required at submission.
There are 50 reserved women seats in parliament. The Election Commission estimates the BNP-led alliance will secure 36 seats, the Jamaat-led alliance 13, and independents one.
According to the schedule, nomination submission ends April 21, scrutiny will be held on April 22-23 and voting is scheduled for May 12.
