Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam was released from jail this morning, a day after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court acquitted him in a case over crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

“Azharul Islam was released from the CCU (prison cell) of PG Hospital (Bangladesh Medical University Hospital) at 9:05am today after verifying all the legal documents,” Jannat-Ul-Farhad, Assistant Inspector General (Development and Media) at the Prisons Headquarters, told BSS.

The legal documents were sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Tuesday night.

The Jamaat leader was sent to jail on 23 August 2012, following his arrest in a case over crimes against humanity.
